Alice walked into the barracks and sat on her bed, pulling her shoes from her feet she whimpered, it was sore, and after spending a few days inside Sanctuary with no shoes on her feet ached from having them on her feet once more. Even her thickest socks had done nothing to stop the rubbing and she how had four sizable blisters on her feet. She threw her boot away from her in a tiny fit af rage. Almost bursting into tears when she realised she would have to stand up and go get it so nobody tripped over it.
Instead of doing that however she rolled over and muffled her face into her pillow. She never had time to release any of her emotions over the past year and as an emotional person it was all catching up to her. She sobbed into her pillow thinking of everything she missed and how everything wasn't fair. She was being a baby she knew.
She thought of her aunt and how she hoped she was still alive, nobody in this world had loved her like her auntie. The woman who had taught her everything she needed to know about life and love, the woman who had shown her that life was more than money. The woman who had set her up to survive this outbreak. Alice couldn't thank her enough. She sniffled a little and thought about the note she had left her Aunt, she had mentioned going back to the farm a year from when she had left it, and while that was still a fair while away, she hoped her Aunt had gone home and seen the letter, and was waiting for the day Alice returned for her.

It is easier to know where you are going... ...When you know where you have been
She felt dirty. Everything ached and the blisters on her hands had blisters of their own. For just once she didn't want to dig anymore, she just wanted the garden done, she wanted weeds to die and the plants to grow. Softly opening the barrack door, in case someone was sleeping, she slipped inside, closing the door again just as softly.
Her hand lifted to rub the back of her neck, feeling the heat rising from the skin, telling her that she'd been sun burnt again, despite staying in the shade as much as she possibly could. She leaned against the wall, sliding down and pulled off her boots, not wanting to track dirt through the sleeping area. Her socks came off with her boots, the knitted fabric laid over the top so they'd air out a little. She had long gotten over her issue with re-wearing socks before they'd been washed. Washing was so far between that she didn't even notice anymore. Not herself anyway. Soon enough, someone would start complaining about smells and she'd have to find some way to run the showers with no water.
It was then that she noticed the boot in the middle of the barracks. Such a dainty little thing could only belong to Alice. And sure enough, the girl was curled up on her bed, her head buried in her pillow. For a moment, Magella thought that she was asleep, but in the silence of the barracks, she heard a soft, muffled sniffling. Was Alice crying?
Climbing up onto her feet, Magella moved over to the girl's bed and sat down. The sniffling was definitely louder, Alice was crying into her pillow. "Hey." she murmured, hoping she wasn't going to scare the girl. "Something you wanna talk about?" Her hand reached out and gently stroked Alice's long hair. She could feel knots, and it was a little oily, but it was still soft despite not being washed for gods knew how long. Her eyes caught on how dirty her fingers looked, saw how much dirt was under her fingernails and she quickly removed her hand.
Alice felt the person who entered sit, then start to stroke her hair. When she heard the voice she was relieved, glad it wasn't any of the other people who could have found her this way. She tried to stop sniffling enough to respond, and after a few long minutes she did. "We lost so much." Alice said into her pillow, "And I don't even know what did it to us. Did we make it? Or is the planet fighting us." Alice voiced her latest thoughts, most of it muffled into the pillow. The thought of her children never getting to fly in a plane, never getting to go to school, never getting to go to Disneyland or somewhere similar. They couldn't even watch Disney movies. Alice sobbed again. She would never watch another Disney movie.
She sniffed loudly before turning to Magella, looking at her with a tear stained face, "Why did I survive?" She looked at the other girl, she was no doubt meant to survive, her hair short and effective, her muscles developed, her leadership and knowhow strong. But Alice, she didn't have any of that, she was small and had very little fighting skills. She had survived as a scavanger, through sheer luck. But was she really that lucky? Was this the world for her anymore... Alice didn't know.
She looked into Magella's face, the face of her only friend. Sure there were other people here. Alice couldn't face the older males, they made her feel scared, she could cook for them, and small talk however anything more than that made Alice squirm. Lex was... interesting, very kind but not really her type, she still couldn't put a finger on why. Lastly the girls, they all know how to hunt and how to look after themselves, leaving for long amounts of time, so Alice was often left alone here at Sanctuary. She didn't mind but, but it made Magella well and truly the only person she cared for so far.

It is easier to know where you are going... ...When you know where you have been
She didn't have any answers. She never did, she was only guessing. The sight of Alice crying, looking so defeated made her angry. None of them could do this alone, and they couldn't do it together either. Everyone was so caught up in their own misery that they couldn't support each other. Magella couldn't say that none of them deserved this but she could say that they shouldn't have to go through it alone. The anger boiled up inside her, directed fully at the zombies that were so focused on their demise.
"I don't know, Alice." she answered finally. "The planet has always been fighting against us. Just because all of a sudden humans have stopped polluting the world, doesn't mean the world is magically better. This... This might be the reset button. Like with the dinosaurs. The small life, single-cells and deep-sea creatures will probably survive. Maybe in a few million years new creatures will dig up our bones and wonder how we died."
Gently, Magella wiped away the tear that was rolling down Alice's cheek, pushing her hair back from her face so she could see the girl better. "I'm not going to say that everything happened for a reason, because I don't believe that bullshit. Everything is what we make it, and you just happened to make it all the way here. And I'm glad. You're the one person I can boss around without feeling like I should be taking orders from you instead." she grinned, ruffling Alice's hair just a little. She wanted to see the girl smile again.
"I am glad you survived. Not everyone can be hard. It would make for a very tense group. You bring a certain lightness to this place. A homely touch. I look forward to coming home to your cooking. You save me in your own way. Not everyone has to go out and kill zombies. There's so much work here that needs doing, people need to know this place has been claimed, that it's someone's home, and that they can call this place home too. Can you imagine Desmond opening the door with a smile? Offering food and water?" Magella snorted a little at her imagination.
